Dear Friends of Beccles Open Air Swimming Pool
May 2008

Nearly two years have passed since our support group of people passionate about open-air swimming was formed at the Bear and Bells pub in Old Market in July 2006 and I am writing to tell you what has been happening since then.

Although it may seem as if nothing much has changed, a lot has been happening 'behind the scenes'. After several comings and goings, the Committee has finally settled down into a hard core of devoted workers, including:

Chair - Maureen Saunders ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) Tel: 01502 714911
Secretary - Eric Wareham ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) Tel: 01502 719712

Please get in touch with either of them or myself if you wish to make a comment/suggestion, offer practical help or even - dare I say? - offer money!

On the subject of money, we are trying to fundraise full steam ahead for all the improvements and changes which Waveney District Council have failed to carry out over the years, in order to make the pool an exciting and attractive venue for the people of Beccles and surrounds. On a boring, practical level, the pool has been leaking precious, heated water for years, because of a crack down the middle, caused by extreme variations in the wet/dry land surrounding it. So first we have to mend the crack and check the pipework (buried deep under the pool basin) to stop further leakage. One solution may be to reduce the depth of the water at the deep end by creating a false bottom and re-lining the whole basin. A costly business, as you can imagine!

But first we have to find out whether the outdoor pool will be sustainable in the long term - even if an indoor pool is built in the next few years - and so we are inviting a team of architects from Ipswich, who have worked on the Broomhill Lido there, to do a Feasibility Study for us. Their quote for this is £25,000, + VAT and we are investigating sources of funding to meet this cost. We also need to do our own local fundraising and our next 'do' will be at the St Benet's fete on July 5th, where we have been offered a stall. Try and come and support us, if you can!

We are buzzing with exciting ideas to bring the pool into the 21st Century, including a riverside cafe, possibly jutting out on decking from the river bank, once the unsightly Beccles Rowing Club hut is removed (they have moved to new premises.) We will have to chop down the leylandii hedge but the pretty silver birches will be retained. There are also plans to attach an open plan community room for hire by groups wishing to practise healthy activities such as Yoga, Pilates , baby massage or other similar options: any ideas? Any demand for National Childbirth Trust ante-natal classes, or gentle exercise for the elderly? In the pool itself we could programme in Aquacise or Flotation classes or at the other end of the age-range, how about mother'n'toddler swimming lessons or even to adults who missed out in their youth? We welcome your suggestions, please; the pool is for everybody, young or old or inbetween, whatever your colour, race or creed.

A reminder: the new season starts this weekend on Sunday, May 25th and we hope you will notice the shiny new paint on the changing room doors and the newly mown grass, all done by a band of willing volunteers over the last fortnight. If you would like to add your name to the hands-on workforce, please contact one of us.

With very best wishes for happy, healthy swimming in 2008
